“You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going…” –Mike Litman
Have you fallen into that trap of wanting and needing to get things perfect before you actually begin doing anything?
I know I sure have so many times that I’ve lost count. Let me tell you a story to show you what I mean.
We have a room in our house that would be perfect to turn into a library. It has a fireplace, so the idea was to get a couple of those big leather Cigar Chairs, place some reading lamps behind them, add a table in between, build some bookshelves and we’d have our library.
So, instead of buying bookshelves, I decided to make them myself. I enjoyed woodshop in High School and I’m a guy, so I love power tools. Plus, I thought to myself, “It’s got to be cheaper to build them myself.”
Off to build the shelves….
Well, first I had to find the right plans. I can’t build bookshelves without plans. So I bought books and magazines and researched on the internet and finally found plans for the bookshelves that would look great in our new library.
Then I had to have all the tools. I mean, come on, you can’t build quality shelves with tools from Wal-Mart. Even more research, which tools were the best, which lasted the longest? Hold on a second, this was getting kind of expensive! Quality tools are not cheap. But they had to be the best!
Next, I had to find a place to get the wood. Couldn’t have just any ol’ plywood shelves or construction lumber, the wood had to be Cherry, Oak or Mahogany. Did you know there’s a wood called Bubinga? Very pretty wood! Anyway, it had to be a solid wood that would last for generations!
But you know, then, I had to learn all about wood and the best cuts, and the best types for the changing climate I live in. Don’t want the shelves to warp or get mold and mildew. More research! Turns out that I could buy “rough” lumber for less, but I would have to do more work to the wood to get it to showroom quality. That meant more tools. Bigger tools. Well, not really tools, but machines. Uh Oh!
So, is it finally time to build the shelves?
Wait…. You can’t build the shelves without turning the garage into a workshop! Everything has to be set up and in the right spot. I have to build some shelves to store all my stuff. And I’m going to need a sturdy, solid workbench, because you can’t build anything without a quality workbench! So what’s the best layout for a garage workshop? What’s the best kind of workbench? More research, more plans, more wood and more tools!!
At this point my wife is not a happy camper!
“Honey, we need to get an electrician in to re-wire the garage, I need more powerful outlets and more of them. Oh, and while he’s there, he’s going to have to put a whole new electrical box on the house to handle the additional power we’re going to need.”
Oops, forgot about all the hardware I’m going to need. What’s the best fastener? Nails or Screws? Titanium or carbide? What’s the best sandpaper? The best glue? The best saw blades? More research, more research, more research!
Well, to end the long story, 4 years and thousands of dollars later, I have yet to build the bookshelves. Our library is still in our heads and not in our home.
So does this story relate in any way to your Network Marketing career? Do you spend all your time preparing to do the deed, but never actually getting around to doing the deed?
Let me tell you, there will ALWAYS be something to learn. There will always be something that you don’t know.
But if you try and wait until you know it all, you’ll waste time that you could have used to be making money.
And isn’t that the point? Making money? Not spending money. My advice to you is to learn by doing. Learn and practice. Practice and learn. But do it. The key is doing it.
So it’s worth repeating…
“You don’t have to get it right; you just have to get it going!” –Mike Litman

You Don?t Have to Get it Right?…
I found your entry interesting do I’ve added a Trackback to it on my weblog
…
Hi david
True, the best we can do is to put action because if we want to make things perfect we would never finish studying and the only thing that would happen is that we saturate information.
The best thing is please do it now.
Regards
Magali
Hi David!
I totally agree! It’s important to study but if we don’t take action… how can we get any results?
Only smart people get what they want… and smart people are those who take action!!!
Saludos,
Marco
Hey David!
Great Article. I agree with you, action is more important than knowledge. You can have all the knowledge and wisdom about any topic, but the results wont be seen until you take action and apply all the information you know!
Even if the progress isnt that good, its better than nothing, just as the Mike Litman quote says.
saludos
Jaime
Hi David,
You made me laugh! But I agree with you (at the end) learn by doing. There always be something you don’t know, so better let’s made things happen.
I hope you finally will make your bookshelves.
Cheers
Raisa
This is great David! — and like Raisa, you made me smile
Very wise advice too !
LOL, LOL!! David, that´s exactly me!!!
My God! we can be so complicated…
With Internet I kind of suffered the same “decease” for a while until, knowing myself, I realized that I better started and improved in the making than waiting until “having it right”.
You made me laugh
Great post!
O.K. David, you got me into laughing so hard, my belly hurts.
This is such a great example for all of us to learn. I have so many things in my head at this point and “waiting.” I realize this, but this article has made me look in my mirror. I love the humor, and am still laughing. Good Work my friend!
Hey David,
LOL…you are not alone in this area my friend! But…
We can have all the knowledge in the world, but without ACTION, we have nothing!
Now take action, go build those shelves and put together that beautiful library. You will figure it out as you go.
Thanks for sharing David
