It is Up to You by Jim Rohn

Here’s one of my favorite messages from Jim Rohn:

One of the first things successful people realize is the old adage, “if it is to be, it is up to me.” That is, for you, the fact that your success and your course is up to you. This doesn’t mean that you do it all alone. It simply means that you take responsibility for your life and your career.

Too many people today look at opportunity and figure it is up to someone else to make sure they get it. They look at financial security and hope that the government will make sure they live safely in retirement or in case of disability. They wait and wait, figuring that it is up to someone else. And then the wait is over, and it is too late to do anything. Their life is over and they are filled with regret.

This isn’t true for you however. You know that you must take responsibility for your life. It is up to you.

The fact is that nobody else is going to do it for you “you must do it yourself”.

Now, some people may say, “Jim, that’s a lot of responsibility.” Friends, that is the best news you can ever hear. You get to choose your life. Hundreds of millions of people all around this world would give anything to live in the situation you do “just for the chance to have the opportunity to take control of their destiny. “It is up to you” is a great blessing!

Here’s why:

  1. You get to chart your own destiny. Maybe you want to start a small business and stay there. That’s great because you can choose that. Maybe you want to create a small chain of stores. Maybe you want to have a net worth of $100 million. That’s okay too. The idea is that you get to choose. You can do whatever you like. Different people have different dreams and they should live them accordingly.
  2. You can reap what you sow. Sleep in and go to work late and reap the return. Or get up early and outwork the others and earn a greater return. Place your capital at risk and earn a return “or place it at greater risk and perhaps reap a greater return. You decide what you will sow and thus what you will reap.
  3. No one else can stop you from getting your dream. Yes, there will always be things that come up and people who may not like what you are doing, but you can just move on and chart your own course. There is great freedom in that.
  4. You experience the joy of self-determination. There is no greater pride than knowing you set your mind on something and accomplished it. Those who live with a victim mentality never get to experience the joy of accomplishment because they are always waiting for someone else to come to the rescue. Those who take responsibility get to live the joy of seeing a job well done.

Let me ask you a question: Where will you be in 5 years? 10 years? Or 25 years? Do you know? DO you have an idea? Have you ever dreamed about it or set a goal for it? Are you willing to take responsibility and recognize that, “It is up to you?”

You will be wherever you decide to be in those timeframes. You decide. It is up to you.

And that is very exciting!

I Cried So Hard I Couldn’t Drive!

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about why I use Mentoring for Free, so I thought I’d take a few minutes and share my reasons.

When I started with Mentoring For Free, I thought I knew what it was all about. But there’s a big difference between knowing and “KNOWING”. Let me explain.

I’ve been following the system or “recipe” as outlined by my Mentor Emmanuel Padilla to generate leads and calling them, plugging them into the system, Scheduling Coaching Calls, etc.

Works beautifully.

Well, a strange thing happened a few months ago. I received a “Why” from a young lady. It was beautiful. Heartfelt. Sincere. And all of a sudden I was crying. I was out at the time and I cried the whole drive home. I’m surprised that I didn’t get into an accident. I could barely see.

I didn’t necessarily cry over what she wrote, I cried because I realized that these aren’t “Leads” or “Prospects”, they’re living, breathing People with hopes and dreams and goals and desires. And they’re trusting ME to help them. They’re sharing deep personal feelings with me. I am humbled to say the least.

And then it hit me. What an awesome responsibility that we have to these people! This is not a game. Mentoring For Free is not just a lead generating system. It’s not just training. It’s a way to serve. It’s a way to connect with people on a different level. I mean, you can even say it’s a salvation. At least for some people it is.

What’s so exciting about this, is the fact that once it “hit me” everything changed. It’s no longer about getting leads. It’s about giving and sharing what I know, what we know, to help another human being fulfill their dreams. What could be better than that? The feeling I get when someone has success with a technique I’ve shown them or even the feeling of hope that arises when a person realizes there is someone out there willing to take the time to help them. It’s amazing!

What’s funny, is it seems like the Universe has noticed and said “He finally gets it” and I have more people coming to me asking for help than I did before. It’s like the universe said “He’s ready, let’s give him some people to help.”

I mean, I’ve changed nothing in my actions. I do the same things I did from the beginning. And people are “showing up” asking for help.

I don’t know how I can ever express my gratitude to Michael Dlouhy for developing Mentoring For Free and sharing it with the world. I’m only touched by a small part of it within my own circle of influence. I can’t begin to imagine how he must feel, helping as many people as he does. How does his heart not burst from the joy?

So I want to send a public thank you to Michael Dlouhy from the bottom of my heart for allowing me the opportunity to “get it”. My life has forever been changed for the better.

A Story of Negativity and Blame!

The other day I was sitting in a cafe with my wife having a nice breakfast when we overheard a lady a few tables over chatting with someone across the aisle from her.

I was quite impressed. Obviously she was comfortable talking to people she didn’t know. She was very articulate and communicated well. I thought she would be a great person to have on my team.

As I continued to listen in on her conversation, (I know, that’s bad of me), she explained that she was writing a screenplay about a troubled youth and the education system. I thought it was an interesting idea.

Then everything changed. She started saying how she just knew it would never be made into a movie. She didn’t have the funds and nobody would ever buy it. She blamed the government, the movie industry and even the healthcare industry!

She went on and on with the excuses why it won’t work and why she was in the financial situation that she was, and why her health wasn’t the best.

I was floored! She started off with such a bang, then withered and died right before my eyes!

I’m telling you this story because that lady with her negativity and blaming really hit home with me.

I used to be just like her. I blamed the lack in my life on everyone and everything else.

It took me a very long time to change my beliefs. About a year ago I finally realized that I was the cause of most of my failures. Either because I didn’t believe in what I was doing, or better yet, I didn’t believe in myself.

That’s a hard thing to discover and really understand.

But once I stopped blaming others and stopped constantly thinking negative thoughts, things changed for me. There is a major power in accepting responsibility for everything that happens in your life. You come to realize that if something isn’t right, you have the power to change it.

During those times at the beginning of my Network Marketing Career when things weren’t working and I felt like quitting, I found myself starting to fall back into that negative, blaming frame of mind. I started to blame the system, blame the industry and even blaming the lazy, un-motivated prospects for why I wasn’t succeeding.

Luckily I realized what was happening and quickly re-evaluated the situation. It was me the whole time. I wasn’t working the system. I wasn’t embracing the industry. I hadn’t learned the skills necessary to talk to prospects. So by quitting, I would be quitting on me, not the company or my sponsors.

I’ve quit on myself too many times in the past. I was through doing that. So I re-engaged. I applied myself. I studied. I worked the system. And you know what? I’m succeeding. And I’m proud. Really proud. I’ve entered into new territory and it feels damn good! I will never go back to that way of thinking. It just doesn’t work.

So needless to say I didn’t talk to that lady about my opportunity. I don’t need that kind of negativity in my team nor in my life. I know that at the first sign of a setback, she’ll quit and blame me or the company, or whatever!

My only hope is that one day she figures it out.
