You Don’t Have to Get it Right…

Category : Preparation, Working Smarter

“You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going…” –Mike Litman

Have you fallen into that trap of wanting and needing to get things perfect before you actually begin doing anything?

I know I sure have so many times that I’ve lost count. Let me tell you a story to show you what I mean.

We have a room in our house that would be perfect to turn into a library. It has a fireplace, so the idea was to get a couple of those big leather Cigar Chairs, place some reading lamps behind them, add a table in between, build some bookshelves and we’d have our library.

So, instead of buying bookshelves, I decided to make them myself. I enjoyed woodshop in High School and I’m a guy, so I love power tools. Plus, I thought to myself, “It’s got to be cheaper to build them myself.”

Off to build the shelves….

Well, first I had to find the right plans. I can’t build bookshelves without plans. So I bought books and magazines and researched on the internet and finally found plans for the bookshelves that would look great in our new library.

Then I had to have all the tools. I mean, come on, you can’t build quality shelves with tools from Wal-Mart. Even more research, which tools were the best, which lasted the longest? Hold on a second, this was getting kind of expensive! Quality tools are not cheap. But they had to be the best!

Next, I had to find a place to get the wood. Couldn’t have just any ol’ plywood shelves or construction lumber, the wood had to be Cherry, Oak or Mahogany. Did you know there’s a wood called Bubinga? Very pretty wood! Anyway, it had to be a solid wood that would last for generations!

But you know, then, I had to learn all about wood and the best cuts, and the best types for the changing climate I live in. Don’t want the shelves to warp or get mold and mildew. More research! Turns out that I could buy “rough” lumber for less, but I would have to do more work to the wood to get it to showroom quality. That meant more tools. Bigger tools. Well, not really tools, but machines. Uh Oh!

So, is it finally time to build the shelves?

Wait…. You can’t build the shelves without turning the garage into a workshop! Everything has to be set up and in the right spot. I have to build some shelves to store all my stuff. And I’m going to need a sturdy, solid workbench, because you can’t build anything without a quality workbench! So what’s the best layout for a garage workshop? What’s the best kind of workbench? More research, more plans, more wood and more tools!!

At this point my wife is not a happy camper!

“Honey, we need to get an electrician in to re-wire the garage, I need more powerful outlets and more of them. Oh, and while he’s there, he’s going to have to put a whole new electrical box on the house to handle the additional power we’re going to need.”

Oops, forgot about all the hardware I’m going to need. What’s the best fastener? Nails or Screws? Titanium or carbide? What’s the best sandpaper? The best glue? The best saw blades? More research, more research, more research!

Well, to end the long story, 4 years and thousands of dollars later, I have yet to build the bookshelves. Our library is still in our heads and not in our home.

So does this story relate in any way to your Network Marketing career? Do you spend all your time preparing to do the deed, but never actually getting around to doing the deed?

Let me tell you, there will ALWAYS be something to learn. There will always be something that you don’t know.

But if you try and wait until you know it all, you’ll waste time that you could have used to be making money.

And isn’t that the point? Making money? Not spending money. My advice to you is to learn by doing. Learn and practice. Practice and learn. But do it. The key is doing it.

So it’s worth repeating…

“You don’t have to get it right; you just have to get it going!” –Mike Litman

Becoming a Millionaire by Jim Rohn

Category : Book Review, Motivational

I’ve been reading an excellent book by Mike Litman and Jason Oman called Conversations with Millionaires.

One of the interviews Mike Litman did was with Jim Rohn. In that interview, Mike asked Jim to talk about the power in the being and the becoming. Here is what Jim Rohn replied:

What we acquire of course is valuable.

But, the greatest value is not what we acquire. The greatest value is what we become.

My mentor had an interesting way of teaching it.

When I was 25 years old he said, “I suggest, Mr. Rohn, that you set a goal to become a millionaire.”

I was all intrigued by that. You know, it’s got a nice ring to it – millionaire.

Then he said, “here’s why…” I thought to myself, ‘gosh, he doesn’t need to teach me why. Wouldn’t it be great to have a million dollars.’ Then he said, “no then you’ll never acquire it. Here’s why. Set a goal to become millionaire for what it makes of you to achieve it.”

He said, “Do it for the skills you have to learn and the person you have to become. Do it for what you’ll end up knowing about the marketplace, what you’ll learn about the management of time and working with people. Do it for the ability of discovering how to keep your ego in check. For what you have to learn about being benevolent. Being kind as well as being strong. What you have to learn about society and business and government and taxes and becoming an accomplished person to reach the status of millionaire. All that you have learned and all that you’ve become to reach the status of millionaire is what’s valuable. Not the million dollars. If you do it that way, then once you become a millionaire, you can give all the money away. Because it’s not the money that’s really important. What’s important is the person you have become.”

That was one of the best pieces of philosophy I have ever heard in my life.

Nobody ever shared it with me like that before.

Another thing he said was, “beware of what you become in pursuit of what you want. Don’t sell out. Don’t sell out your principles. Don’t compromise your values. Because you might acquire something by doing so, but it won’t taste good.”

An old prophet said, “sometimes what tastes good in the mouth finally turns bitter in the belly.”

Then, later we regret that we compromised or that we did something incredibly wrong to acquire something. It’s not worth it. If we do that, then what we get is worthless.

If you use something like that to challenge yourself to grow, to reach a certain level, I think it’s wise. Because then you know where the true value is and that is in the person you become.

Go back and read that again.

It’s not about the million dollars. It’s about what we become in the pursuit. What we have to become to get it.

Now go back and read it again. Read it as many times as necessary until you truly understand what Mr. Rohn is saying. Then begin your journey. Or get in touch with me and we can take that journey together. I’d love to have you along for the ride.
