Why Are All of My Prospects Broke?

Category : Network Marketing

One of my partners called me the other day very dejected. He said that he’s talked with so many people who are broke and just can’t afford the opportunity. He was very concerned that maybe our company is charging too much to get started. This is a very common situation in Network Marketing.

The real truth here isn’t the fact that the cost to join is too high, or even that every prospect is broke. The real truth is that people have a very hard time investing in themselves. Most people don’t think that starting a home based business is an investment in them personally. They view it more as spending money to make money. Which is a limiting belief to begin with.

When a prospect tells me that they would really love to do the business, but they’re dead broke and they can’t spend the money to get started, I like to tell them a story.

The story goes something like this.

Well Mr. Prospect, most people know that there are occupations where the employees have to buy their tools or equipment to do their job. Almost every mechanic has to buy their own tools, same goes for most construction workers. Not to mention those who have to wear uniforms. Even most professionals have to pay some sort of certification fee and ongoing monthly affiliation fee. My friend Joe who is a mechanic had to spend $2000 on tools before he was even considered for his job. And any specialized tool that he needs to fix a car has to come out of his pocket. This is an ongoing thing because the cars now-a-days, they’re always requiring some sort of new tool or some diagnostic equipment to even figure out what’s wrong with them. But you know what the funny thing is? Joe never complains, because he thinks of it as an investment. An investment he makes in himself.

So think of it this way Mr. Prospect. You’re making an investment in YOU and your freedom. As with any investment there are no guarantees, but I can say with a great deal of certainty, that if you take the time to learn the skills, and never give up, I promise to do whatever I can to help your investment pay off, and pay off beyond your wildest dreams.

However, one thing that I can absolutely guarantee you is that if you don’t invest in yourself at some point in time in your life, you will always have to work for someone else building their freedom. So what do you think?

At this point you just leave the decision up to them. Most people will seriously consider whether they want to invest in themselves or not. If they don’t, that’s ok. It’s their decision, not yours.

But if they do decide to join you, please keep your promise to them. Make their success more valuable than your own.
Remember, you are making an investment of your own in every person who joins your company, an investment of time. Make your own investment pay off, and everyone succeeds!

Hey David,

Investing in one’s future by learning and growing is priceless.

Unfortunatley, most people are controlled by self-doubt or fear. Thats why they are in the siturations they are in…unless they change their thinking, they will stay in that sinking ship.

Thanks for sharing David

Sharon

Hi David!

Small world… we share the same prospects!!

But I don´t know how many will survive after your shooting… You go “straight to Mr Prospect´s head”.

I guess that sometimes we are even responsible for that approach… We know the situation is hard for a lot of people, so we approach them almost apologizing for asking. And actually, if we believe in what we do, we should know we are probably putting something very valuable in these person´s hands.

As an artist, just to keep producing my work, which not always “aims a market”, I usually spend way more than what some MLM opportunity cost…

Hi David,
It’s so sad, sometimes people don’t realize that they are spending theirs live creating freedom for others instead of themselves.
Great point to the reference to the commitment one have to have with persons that join us.

David,
Always looking for real stories and tips I can put to use today in my business. I’ll be passing this on to my downline! Thanks for sharing this. Real value! You seem to be a wealth of it!

This is great advice David. We’ve all had to deal with people putting off investment in anything at all BECAUSE they know they are investing in themselves… and they have no faith in themselves. As you point out, if they can’t take the leap, there’s NOTHING we can do to push them.

Move on to the next prospect, and the next… until you find the ones that are willing and even anxious to develop their abilities.
You call them QUALIFIED leads.

They are the only ones you want to work with anyway, in the long run.

Hi David. I know what you are talking about. The people who are not making money are the ones who are not taking action to monetize their business. The work we do is not a get rich quick one, but rather one of commitment, passion and desire. We can learn so much, but it is worthless unless we apply it.
D.

Hey David,
Great Great Great story !!!!
This is real valuable.

We have to remember that after representing this in such way we can really see who are the right people that understand it and they are the real guys who are suitable for us upon others who don’t.

Thanks for sharing this story and the decision you put in front of people right after.

I think it’s a great item for a video I might have to do.
With your permission of course… :)

It’s funny, David. Before I signed up with my company, I did not want to spend any money at all. I was looking for a free opportunity, which is just crazy. Finally, I realized that I HAVE To invest in myself. The money magically appeared…the money I didn’t have.

The truth is that I had an allowance. I get an allowance every month. I spend that allowance on whatever I deem important – gas for my car, snacks, personal coffee dates with myself, etc. When I decided that the business was my first and main priority and that it would eventually pay for everything else, it was a MAJOR shift. I don’t really have any money concerns anymore because I actually was never broke.

The change was in deciding what is important to spend money on; thank God I finally started choosing that which has real value and can add to our family. I just had to change my mind!

Great post, David!!
