7 Steps To Achieving Your Goals

July 29, 2010 | In: Goals

How important is goal setting?

You can’t hit a target you can’t see… or arrive at the right place when you don’t know where you’re going.

Your goals determine how successful, or unsuccessful, you will be in life.

In fact, through my research I’ve found that all top business people and self-made millionaires have very detailed goals-while those stuck barely scraping by have vague dreams or wishes.

The problem is, most people set goals – which they never achieve.

Why? What is the difference between people who set goals and reach them, and the people who set goals and never come close?

I see a few differences:

  1. You’ve got to have a really big dream, one that totally captures your imagination, that truly inspires you.

  2. Choose a model, someone who has done what you want to do. Study every aspect of that person, their skills, their resources, and what they have achieved, so you understand what it takes.

  3. Write down every detail of that dream, no matter how trivial it may seem. The more detail you can picture in your mind, the closer you get to your dream becoming reality.

  4. Spend time each day picturing your exact dream. After you have built your dream picture, it doesn’t take but 3-5 minutes a day to focus completely on it. That action will drive you to your dream’s achievement.

  5. Focus every action in your day on making some part of your dream a reality.

  6. Wherever fear or doubt enter the picture, step right into them. Do whatever it is you fear, over and over, so it no longer looms as a stop on your dream.

  7. Never ever ever quit.

I have personally found these steps to be very effective.

Here is a program that I’ve gone through that has helped me tremendously. I highly recommend it. It’s called The Science of Self-Confidence – How to Build Rock Solid Self-Confidence and Achieve All of Your Goals, by Brian Tracy.

Think of all the things you could do if you enjoyed super levels of self-confidence… your career would be booming, offers would be flying your way, everyone would want to be with you. You would have more opportunities to find that “special someone.” By using the ideas in The Science of Self-Confidence, everything becomes possible. Your belief in your ability to succeed in all areas of life becomes unshakable. Your life will never be the same, once you learn to practice The Science of Self-Confidence.

Brian Tracy has studied, researched, written and spoken for 30 years in the fields of economics, history, business, philosophy and psychology. He is the top selling author of over 45 books that have been translated into dozens of languages. He’ll help you as he’s helped me.

Hi David!

With your article I remembered these words:
Do you need to achieve your most ardent desire, and end up succeeding.
Fared no better what is already done, but striving to achieve what still remains to be done.
The main thing to accomplish something is to believe that you can.

David,

It just hit me today that the main reason, I am doing well in business now is because my mindset has changed. Last year, I thought I would fail miserably. This year, I think I will have massive success, and I am. I’ve already beat the lifetime sponsoring statistic for network marketers (2.7 people) and have a clear, duplicatable process for new business owners to follow. I did the hard work the hard way and now can show others how to avoid all of that drama.

The ONLY reason I am different is because my mind is different. I do your 7 steps every waking – and sleeping – hour of the day.

Thanks for posting this, and I hope that people take heed to it. How we think is the only thing that matters when it comes to success!!

Hi David,
Those steps are great! If you don’t have a clear goal you won’t achieve your dreams.
Visualizations and having our goals in mind every step of the way for sure will lead us to our dreams (Of course we need to take action).
Cheers,
Raisa

Hi Magali, thanks for the comment, you’re right goals have to be believable. They need to be just big enough that they move you to push beyond your normal comfort level, but still be attainable, and make sense to you.

Hola David!

Great post as usual!!! You can’t hit the target you can’t see… I loved it!!!

Your post made me remember about Alice in Wonderland… Remember when Alice is asking to the cat or the worm (I don’t remember well hehe) for help to decide which way to take?

Alice doesn’t even know where she wanted to go, so it doesn’t really matter which way she choose… It’s the same on online business, if you don’t have goals… how do you know when you accomplished something? how do you know when you arrived where you want to?

Saludos,
Marco

David,

Love Brian Tracy and coincidentily I had just pulled out his “Success Mastery” to put in the car better known as my “traveling university” :) . Thanks for the recommendation on this one!

You are so right that it is in the details…studying the successful and knowing exactly what they did, detailing your vision so that encompasses all five senses and having a detailed action plan.

…and it is those little things we do daily and consistently that move us closer to our goals…

Thanks,
David

Great post David!!

Your first 2 lines sum it all up! ‘You can’t hit a target you can’t see…LOVE IT!!!

The few steps you suggest can make a huge difference in people’s success. Its all about the mindset.

I so enjoy reading Brian Traceys books. I’ll have to put this one on my reading list. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for sharing David :)

Hey David, What a great outline for success. I especially love number 5. FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS….That is the key! We often get lost in our business, but that is the key.
Kudos to you my friend!
