Teach Your Children the Value of Hard Work

Category : Children, Meditation, Working Smarter

Meditation for today, August 4th, 2011

Making life “easy” for children usually makes life “hard” for them in adulthood.

Del Smith, the millionaire founder and chairman of Evergreen International Aviation, has often said, “Thank God I was born poor; I learned how to work.” Like many others who made it to the top on their own, Smith believes that the greatest gift that can be given to a child is to teach him or her the value of work. It is a gift that can never be lost or stolen. It’s a natural desire of parents to give their children material things they didn’t have as children. Such generosity, however, often deprives children of the greatest gift you can give them: confidence in their ability to take care of themselves. When you make life “hard” for your children by requiring them to learn the value of work, they will have a far greater likelihood of success as adults.

You Don’t Have to Get it Right…

Category : Preparation, Working Smarter

“You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going…” –Mike Litman

Have you fallen into that trap of wanting and needing to get things perfect before you actually begin doing anything?

I know I sure have so many times that I’ve lost count. Let me tell you a story to show you what I mean.

We have a room in our house that would be perfect to turn into a library. It has a fireplace, so the idea was to get a couple of those big leather Cigar Chairs, place some reading lamps behind them, add a table in between, build some bookshelves and we’d have our library.

So, instead of buying bookshelves, I decided to make them myself. I enjoyed woodshop in High School and I’m a guy, so I love power tools. Plus, I thought to myself, “It’s got to be cheaper to build them myself.”

Off to build the shelves….

Well, first I had to find the right plans. I can’t build bookshelves without plans. So I bought books and magazines and researched on the internet and finally found plans for the bookshelves that would look great in our new library.

Then I had to have all the tools. I mean, come on, you can’t build quality shelves with tools from Wal-Mart. Even more research, which tools were the best, which lasted the longest? Hold on a second, this was getting kind of expensive! Quality tools are not cheap. But they had to be the best!

Next, I had to find a place to get the wood. Couldn’t have just any ol’ plywood shelves or construction lumber, the wood had to be Cherry, Oak or Mahogany. Did you know there’s a wood called Bubinga? Very pretty wood! Anyway, it had to be a solid wood that would last for generations!

But you know, then, I had to learn all about wood and the best cuts, and the best types for the changing climate I live in. Don’t want the shelves to warp or get mold and mildew. More research! Turns out that I could buy “rough” lumber for less, but I would have to do more work to the wood to get it to showroom quality. That meant more tools. Bigger tools. Well, not really tools, but machines. Uh Oh!

So, is it finally time to build the shelves?

Wait…. You can’t build the shelves without turning the garage into a workshop! Everything has to be set up and in the right spot. I have to build some shelves to store all my stuff. And I’m going to need a sturdy, solid workbench, because you can’t build anything without a quality workbench! So what’s the best layout for a garage workshop? What’s the best kind of workbench? More research, more plans, more wood and more tools!!

At this point my wife is not a happy camper!

“Honey, we need to get an electrician in to re-wire the garage, I need more powerful outlets and more of them. Oh, and while he’s there, he’s going to have to put a whole new electrical box on the house to handle the additional power we’re going to need.”

Oops, forgot about all the hardware I’m going to need. What’s the best fastener? Nails or Screws? Titanium or carbide? What’s the best sandpaper? The best glue? The best saw blades? More research, more research, more research!

Well, to end the long story, 4 years and thousands of dollars later, I have yet to build the bookshelves. Our library is still in our heads and not in our home.

So does this story relate in any way to your Network Marketing career? Do you spend all your time preparing to do the deed, but never actually getting around to doing the deed?

Let me tell you, there will ALWAYS be something to learn. There will always be something that you don’t know.

But if you try and wait until you know it all, you’ll waste time that you could have used to be making money.

And isn’t that the point? Making money? Not spending money. My advice to you is to learn by doing. Learn and practice. Practice and learn. But do it. The key is doing it.

So it’s worth repeating…

“You don’t have to get it right; you just have to get it going!” –Mike Litman

Network Marketing Professionals Are Sorters

Category : Network Marketing, Working Smarter

Network Marketing Professionals Sort, Network Marketing Amateurs convince.

You see, Professionals spend all their time trying to locate someone who wants to do the business, but amateurs, they find one person who would be good and they high pressure, browbeat and keep pitching them week after week. They try to convince them. They say, “I think this way, and therefore you should think this way too! And I want you to join my business.” Amateurs waste all their time with people who don’t want to join their business, trying to change their whole way of life and attitude. Professionals just sort.

Your whole job as a Professional Network Marketer is to locate and find people who want to join your business.

Are you familiar with the Oyster Story?

The Oyster Story goes something like this:

They say you can find pearls in oysters. So imagine we’re sitting on a dock near the ocean and we each get a bucket of 100 oysters. Inside each bucket of oysters, 5 have pearls and 95 do not.

For demonstration purposes, let’s say I am the Amateur Network Marketer and you are the Professional.

I take the first oyster out of the bucket and take my trusty knife and slice it open to reveal that this particular oyster is without a pearl. So what do I do? I simply put it back together all nice and calmly and apologize for cutting him open and hold it in my hands and keep it warm and hope and hope and hope that it grows a pearl.

So let me ask you, does that make good sense? It’s pretty stupid isn’t it?

Now You, as a Professional would take your trusty knife and slice yours open to reveal that your oyster is without a pearl also. What do you do? You either throw it in the ocean or eat it raw, and grab the next one.

You see, in Network Marketing, that’s what we need to do. We need to find the pearls, find the ones who want to do it. Because not everyone wants to earn extra money or set aside the time to do the business. They are not who we’re looking for.

Make your job as a Network Marketer easier. Be a Professional and Sort for the Pearls.

When should I quit my job and become a full-time network marketer?

Category : Working Smarter

One of the biggest reasons people join network marketing is because they hate their jobs.

Their goal is to earn enough money so they can afford to leave their present employment. Will that give them financial security? Probably not.

For example, let’s say that John earns $2,500 a month. That $2,500 a month pays the expenses for John and his family. While he is building his networking business, his part-time checks of $1,000 per month represent extra income that is not required to cover their personal overhead.

It’s unencumbered money. That extra $1,000 a month could buy trips, nice cars, fun times, pay off debts, or could be saved for retirement or invested for financial security. Life is good with extra cash to spend as you wish.

But what happens when John’s network marketing check reaches $2,500 a month?

He quits his job. Now John’s $2,500 a month network marketing check pays the expenses for John and his family. There is no extra cash or fun money. The budget is tight. John sweats his sales volume every month hoping his check won’t drop to $2,300.

See the difference?

The successful networkers I know keep their job and invest their network marketing check. After a few years they are totally financially independent because of their investments.

Then, they quit their job. Their investments pay the monthly expenses while their networking checks are spent on vacations and other fun activities.

“Nothing magical happens when you quit your job except that your income disappears.” — Art Spikol

“Since I quit my j-o-b, I sleep like a baby. Every three hours I get up and cry.” — Anonymous Distributor

Something to consider.

Are you a walking “bad advertisement” for your business?

Category : Working Smarter

My Mentor Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter shared this with me today. Hmmm… I think he was trying to tell me something… It’s a good lesson for us all.

“Every day the ant works all day. Every hour the ant is busy. And in the end what happens?”

“Someone steps on him.”

Many network marketers work their business every free hour they have. Weeknights, weekends, holidays, family reunions, wedding receptions, every event is an opportunity to pass out business cards, catalogs, brochures, audios and . . .

What’s happening?

These network marketers are working all day, just like the ant. They are so busy with activities, they fail to see the big picture or real goal. We just hope these networkers don’t get stepped on like the ant.

Here is a point of view that networkers should consider:

1. If you spend all your free time building your business, what is your prospect going to see? Your prospect will avoid joining your business because he doesn’t want to spend every waking hour networking.

2. If you advertise how network marketing gives you time and money freedom, yet you work your business every waking hour, doesn’t something feel wrong with this picture?

3. And what about all this activity? Networking should be simple. If all we have to do is sponsor a few people and build them into leaders, then what’s all this other activity about?

4. Would a balanced, happy life attract more prospects?

We are living advertisements for network marketing. We should be careful what our advertising says.

What does your advertising say?

Great thoughts to ponder!
