Make a Pain List and Check It… Often!

Are you familiar with Anthony Robbins’ Personal Power program? If not, you should check it out. I recently dusted it off and started listening to it again.

In the program he talks a lot about the Pleasure – Pain principle. Basically it’s all about how people will do more to avoid pain then they ever will to get pleasure. Like for example, if there is something that we know we need to do, but keep avoiding doing that thing, it means that the pain we associate with doing it is stronger than the pleasure we would get if we did it. So we don’t do it. But, after awhile, an interesting thing happens. The pain associated with NOT doing it, becomes so strong that we end up doing it after all.


This has me thinking about how this applies to Network Marketing and our businesses in general.

For the most part, when we think of what Network Marketing can provide us, we think of all the Pleasure things, like having more money, taking vacations, owning our lives, helping other people and having all the toys we’ve always wanted.

I’ve studied a lot of the leaders on our industry and found that, while all those things are nice and were part of the drive that caused them to be able to have those things, the real reason behind that drive and focus was all the pain of NOT having those things. The pain of working for someone else, the pain of seeing their kids stuck in daycare, the pain of constently stuggling to pay their bills and the pain of seeing others succeed who were really no more talented, educated or lucky than they were.

It’s the pain that drove them.

That’s what I think is sometimes missing from those that aren’t succeeding with their business. They haven’t associated enough pain to NOT succeeding.

One of the things I always encourage members of my team to do is to figure out their “Why” and most people’s “Why” is something like making more money, or give to charity, or stop working at a job. While all those things are great, I believe they aren’t enough to really motivate them. I can instantly tell a person’s committment level based upon their “Why”.

I’ve received some really powerful ones. Ones that have made ME cry. Those are usually the people that see success.

What I’m suggesting here is that those with the most pain associated with not succeeding are actually more likely to succeed than those that just focus on the pleasure success will bring them.

So what should we do to find that pain? Ha ha, I never thought I’d want people to find and focus on pain, but this is very important.

Make a list.

Write down all the reasons why you MUST NOT FAIL.
Write down all the things that are painful about where you are right now.
Write down all the things you will not settle for.
Write down all the things that will happen if you don’t succeed in your business.
Write down all the names of the people who say you can’t do it, and along side those names, write what they’ve said to you.

I believe that once you have this list and review it daily, it can be just as important as your list of goals. The goal is what you want. The “Pain List” is what will drive you there.

So don’t wait, go make your pain list. Think of how much it will hurt you if you don’t.

The Story of The Turkey and the Bull

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

“I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey, “but I haven’t got the energy.

Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull. They’re packed with nutrients.”

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree

Soon he was spotted by a farmer
Who promptly shot the turkey out of the tree.

Moral of the story:……..

Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there!

My Dreams are Not Yours to Take!

You’re always trying to convince me that success is for other people. That I’m not worthy.

You’re always trying to distract me from doing things I need to do by enticing me to do other fun stuff.

You’re always trying to make me put things off until they are too late.

You’re always putting me down.

You’re always telling me to stay on the safe path and not take chances.

You know what?

I’m through with you! I’m not listening to you any longer!

This is MY life, not yours! I make the decisions, not you!

You don’t control my life!!

My dreams will come true!
My decisions aren’t stupid!
My successes are lasting and forever!
I will do the important things in spite of you!
My goals are achievable and I will attain them!
I WILL NOT fail. I refuse to!
I am worthy of success! I was born with the right!
I will not be distracted by meaningless things!
I will not procrastinate any longer!
I will not let you put me down. I deserve better!
I will not stay on the safe path. I want to grow, and unless I try new things, I will always stay the same!

From this day forward I control my thoughts, my actions and my future!

From this day forward I will be who I was meant to be.

So get out of my way and leave me alone! You will no longer hold me hostage!!!

This is a letter I wrote to myself, more specifically to my fear. Since that day, amazing things have happened and I’ve grown and succeeded beyond my wildest dreams.

Don’t let your fears control you. You deserve everything this life has to offer. Just think about what you would do if you weren’t afraid. You’ll amaze yourself!

You Can Train Your Thoughts Like You’d Train a Dog

Train your thoughts like you’d train a dog?

Does that sound ridiculous? OK. Look at it this way. Your thoughts come from a combination of your background & environment, your life experience, and your observations. And the way you look at each of those is entirely under your control.

You’ve probably noticed that things change out there in the world. Life can be very unpredictable at times. And yet the biggest problem most people have is that they expect they will get the same bad results in the future as they got last week – or 20 years ago.


You can train your brain to think the way you want it to, to achieve the best Network Marketing results. And you must. Train yourself to focus better, and you will be a different person. Set a goal of making faster decisions – maybe put yourself on a timer for tough decisions, so you don’t stew over them.

Right or wrong, just go ahead. You will become a more effective & happier person.

A lot of people think they need more information to make a decision. In the real world, you often still make the wrong choice even with a lot more information. So you’re better off to just make a choice, execute it, find out if it’s right or wrong, and then keep going or change course, based on the feedback you get from life.

That is a LOT like you’d train a dog. It’s very simple. Just take the same attitude toward your own mind. Put yourself in charge, and tell it what to do. Your life goes a lot better that way.

Strange Practices of People Who Never Succeed

Over the years, I’ve observed a lot of people who have not achieved what they want in life. These people often have a lot in common. I thought it might benefit YOU to have a list of things NOT to do.

So, the following is what seems to be a mental “To Do” list for non-achievers:

  1. Don’t listen to anyone who has had actual success.
  2. Take advice from everybody you know who has never achieved a dream.
  3. Plan, plan, plan, and plan some more. Get everything 100% right. Then check it a few more times before you actually DO something.
  4. Blame others for your failure to achieve what you want.
  5. Take time every day to remind yourself what a loser you are.
  6. Repeat the same mistakes over and over.
  7. Keep going in the same direction that has never gotten you where you want to go.
  8. Don’t do anything to replace those limiting, negative thoughts you’ve always had.
  9. Keep spending time around those people who assure you you’ll never be successful.
  10. Insist that you are right, no matter what the outcome of any action, because being wrong is worse than failure.

A Good Story That Might Make You a Lot of Money!

We all know that stories are a great way to help someone relate to our message. Our prospects are no different. Telling your prospect a good story can be very effective in opening the door and leading to further discussions about starting a home-based business. Many have used this 2-minute story very effectively to get started building their Network Marketing Business.

I’m going to show you the exact 2-minute story that I use. If you’d like to adapt it to your story, you will need to change all the sections in RED to Your Information.

For this training scenario, let’s say that I’m at a restaurant and the Waitress/Potential Prospect has come over to greet us.

Waitress: Hi, my name is Cheryl and I’ll be taking care of you tonight, can I start you off with something to drink?

You: Hi Cheryl, you sure can, but first, would it be okay if I asked you a question?

Waitress: Sure.

You: Well Cheryl, I wanted to ask you if this was a career for you, or are you open to other possibilities.

Waitress: This is just a job for me while my husband finishes school. I’m always open to other possibilities. Why?

You: Well, I got a good story, it takes about 2 minutes. It might make you a lot of money and it might not, would you like to hear it when you have the time?

Waitress: Sure, I love a good story. It’s not busy at the moment, so if it’s only 2 minutes, tell me now.

Cheryl has now become a Prospect.

You: If you never had to go to work again, would that be okay?

Prospect: Of course, that would be lovely, but I still need to get a paycheck. (Cheryl is creating a vision in her mind.)

You: Well, I felt the same way. My job interferes with my life, I can’t get the time off I need, and I spend hours commuting every day.

So I decided to start some sort of home-based business so I wouldn’t have to spend all of my time at the job the rest of my life.

I got to figuring … I only need about $60,000 a year to replace my take-home pay, so I went looking for a business that had a simple system and was easy to learn how to do!

You know how a lot of people are always dieting, drinking energy drinks like Red Bull, and a lot of people take vitamins and are interested in natural health?

Prospect: Yes.

You: There is a company called Vitamark that has cool versions of these products that people really like.

They have some cookies that dieters love to eat to manage their weight, an energy drink about 1/3 the price of Red Bull, but gives you a better buzz, and lots of vitamins and healthy things people buy from them all the time.

Well, Vitamark has this Freedom Magazine and on page 15 it says that to earn $60,000 a year, I would need approximately 300 people using the Vitamark products, and then I’d never have to go to work again.

Now, I don’t know how to get 300 users of the products now, but I can learn.

Hey, I learned how to drive a car, learned to be a parent, learned all about the computer, and I can certainly learn a SYSTEM to get 300 people using the Vitamark products.

(This takes away the objection of I don’t know how to do it, I don’t know anyone, etc. Many people believe they have to know how to do everything before they even start learning.)

So I got to thinking, what’s going to be easier?

Going to work every weekday for the rest of my life, fighting traffic, warehousing the kids in day care, and begging for the time off for vacations?

Or learning a SYSTEM to get 300 people using Vitamark products?

So what do you think?

I love this story because it’s virtually rejection free. If your prospect is interested, they’ll ask for more information and you can give them your card and arrange a future meeting over coffee to explain more.

If they are not interested, they’ll probably say something like, “Well, I like what I’m doing now, so what was it that can I get you to drink again?”

All you have to do at that point is give them your card and say, “Well, if things ever change for you in the future or you know someone who might be looking to make some extra money, give me a call.”

If your prospect is not interested, it’s not a big deal. At least you shared your story and maybe it just wasn’t their time.

But the beauty of a good story is that people remember it long after you tell it. You never know, maybe 2 weeks later your Prospect has a really, really bad day at work and finally decides they need to do something different. They’ll think to themselves, “What was it that person was doing again? I should give them a call to find out exactly how that works.”

So that’s it, remember, since I used the actual numbers and products from my Vitamark business, you’ll need to substitute yours for the items and numbers in red.

Oh, did you notice that I subtly asked for a reference at the end? It’s very important that you do that. Even if it’s not their time, they undoubtedly know someone whose time it is. It never hurts to ask, and you’ll never know if you don’t.

In a future article, we’ll go over the art of asking for a reference. It’s a great way to explode your business.

The Biggest Network Marketing Secret Revealed!

In honor of my 100th blog post, I’m going to reveal to you the Biggest Network Marketing Secret Ever! And along the way, I’m going to dispel one of the oldest Network Marketing Myths of all time. Read on.

I was talking to a guy the other day about Network Marketing and he said to me, “I don’t believe in Network Marketing or MLM. You’re just working to make the people above you rich, and you never make a dime.”

Seriously?

The problem is, many people think this way. It’s one of the oldest Network Marketing Myths there is. What they don’t even realize, is that statement is more true when you work at a regular job every day.


When you’re hired for a job, you get paid (hopefully) what the going rate is, not necessarily what you are worth. Now your job has to be one that provides an end result of profit for the owners, or that job wouldn’t exist. I know this is an obvious statement, but companies aren’t there to break even, they exist to make a profit. So the work you do translates into a profit for the company, i.e. the owner or shareholders. If that wasn’t the case, there would be no job.

So when you take a job, what is the real purpose for you working that job? Are you working to make others rich? You bet! But what do you get out of that? A steady paycheck? Ok, I’ll give you that one. Is it enough to pay your bills? Hopefully. Will it give you the lifestyle you dream of? Doubtful. Does it give you the time to do all the things you want to do? Hardly. But hey, it’s a job and you can make some money. Fair enough.

Now let’s switch over to Network Marketing for a minute. Your up-line only earns money by helping you earn money. So think about it. If I teach you how to make $1,000, and I make $100 for doing so, isn’t that fair? But get this, you aren’t even the one paying me the $100. The company is. So you are actually getting trained for free! Free training on how to make money, while you’re making money!! How can you beat that? But wait, check this out, I don’t get that $100 UNLESS you make that $1000! If you don’t make any money, I don’t make any money. So wouldn’t it be in my best interest to teach you how to make lots and lots of money? Doesn’t that make sense?

Let’s put it another way, have you ever bought stocks or bonds? If so, you know that you have to pay a broker a fee to buy those stocks and bonds. You have to pay this fee regardless of whether or not you make any money. You even have to pay that fee if you lose money!! How fair does that sound? But people do it every day, many times a day for some.

What about when you buy a car? Do you think the guy helping you sign those papers isn’t making money off the sale of that car? But here’s the kicker in this scenario, the minute you drive that car off the lot, it’s lost almost half its value. And to add insult to injury, if you’re financing that car, you’re actually paying almost 3 times what the car is worth after all is said and done! Yet, every day tons of new cars are sold, and nobody thinks twice about it.

So let’s go back to the part where it would be in my best interest to teach you how to make lots and lots of money, because this is where a lot of people make a HUGE mistake in Network Marketing, and here is where I reveal to you the Biggest Network Marketing Secret you’ll ever hear.

Don’t ever sponsor anyone into your business unless you are 100% committed to teaching them how to make tons of money!

I don’t understand how anyone can sponsor someone and leave them high and dry. That is a recipe for failure and that is why most people fail. How can anyone expect to make money in this industry if the only way to make money is if you teach your team to make money, and you’re not doing that?

Take a look at the most successful people in this industry. Those making the most money. The top 5%. The Legends.

What separates them from you? Are they any better than you? Are they any smarter than you? Better looking? Better Dressed? Taller? Shorter? What separates them from you?

I believe the one main reason is that they found a way to teach others how to do this business and in turn, taught those people how to teach others. You see, it doesn’t stop with just one generation. It must be taught again and again. It’s a philosophy that spreads through the organization. Everyone has to be doing the same things, believe the same things. Everyone needs to know how to make money. And obviously, if everyone is making money, everyone is making money.

If you get this concept, I mean REALLY GET THIS CONCEPT, and you should if you are a Network Marketer, your life will be a whole lot easier.

If you don’t know how to do this business, or you don’t know how to teach others to do this business, then you need to find someone to teach you. You need to study. You need to train. Because if you don’t, you’re going to end up not very much more successful than you are now.

Either learn how to do it right and to teach others, or someone else will teach your down-line. And more than likely, at that point, they won’t be your down-line any more.

So if anyone ever asks you if you are going to make money off of them, say, “Yes, the company pays me on how well I train you to make money. So my goal is to train you how to make more money than you can possibly spend. Is that fair?”

Who can argue with that?
