The other day I was sitting in my son’s room watching him play a video game he bought a couple weeks earlier. The game was interesting. The “hero” had to go through a series of challenges to gain experience to eventually fight this huge creature that no human in real life could ever dream of defeating. The game itself wasn’t as much interesting as how my son was playing it. There was this one particular “boss” that he just could not beat. He explained that he had been trying to beat him for over a week and just couldn’t do it.
As I watched him play, he would start the game, build up experience, and then go fight the boss, sometimes.
I say sometimes because if at any point during that experience gathering, he missed something or got killed, he would just reset the game and start over.
I watched this happen again and again, and being curious, I asked him why he did that. He explained that it was no use going on to fight the boss unless he was at full strength. The boss was just too tough.
Interesting….
I really started thinking about this and how it applies to Network Marketing, and I’ve noticed this same behavior in my life and the lives of others.
When things get tough and we think we can’t get past an obstacle, we quit and start over. We rarely push through. It’s easier to think we will do better “next time” or with a different opportunity, or a different system.
This is a real problem that we need to deal with. It holds us back. It wastes a lot of time. But how do we deal with it? What is the key to stop this behavior? I believe that key is to educate ourselves.
Many times we go into something totally blind and try to grope our way around thinking we can make it work without the knowledge of how it really does work. And when it doesn’t work the way we want, or think it should, we quit and put the blame on the company. “It was the company that didn’t work. It sucked.”
Maybe if we would take the time to learn “how” and “why” it worked, or even the opposite, why it “doesn’t” work, before jumping in head first, we’d have a fighting chance. There are some really good companies out there. There are also some really lousy ones too. And there are even ones that are out to cheat you. We all know it, so why don’t we take the time to educate ourselves to the point where we can spot these bad opportunities?
I suggest you find a coach or a mentor who has figured out all the little nuances and kinks. Find a system that is proven and works.
Learn how to evaluate companies. I can’t stress this enough. The more knowledge you have going into something, the far better you are able to handle those inevitable pitfalls that are going to show up. Or better yet, how to avoid that whole mess to begin with.
Now, that being said, should you stick with a company when it’s just not working, or one that no matter what you do, it won’t work?
Nope, not at all.
But before you jump ship, make sure you know what’s in the water. Make sure you know what that next ship is all about and how it works. Otherwise, you could find yourself in the exact same situation, and looking for the reset button.
Oh, and by the way, my son finally did beat that boss. His awesome Father googled how to do it, and found out some secrets and tricks to get it done.
Interesting how that works!
Until next time…
