Are You Building a Business, Church Group or Political Party?

Are you building a business, a church group or political party?

I really love election season!

It gives me a chance to pare down my friends list on Facebook. It’s the time of year when all the complainers, whiners and bigots come out of their cave and post crap that only they care about.

Wait, let me rephrase that, they post crap that only they care about. –Darn, there’s no better way to put it!

The same goes for the religious zealots out there that do nothing more than preach and spew hatred for anything they view as a sin or hatred for anyone with different views than them.

What I find really funny is that most of these people are Network Marketers, Internet Marketers and other business builders, yet they don’t have a clue as to why they’re not getting anywhere in their business. They wonder why nobody joins them… Hmmmmm…

I had a talk with one lady who is very politically active, but to a point of posting very controversial things about the “other” political party, and I advised her that she might want to keep it generic since she is building a business after all, and alienating people might not be the best way to do that.

She informed me that it’s basically her way of “Pre-Sorting” prospects.

Wow! I guess that’s one way to do it.

Look, I don’t begrudge you your religion, your politics, your sexual preference, your foreign vs. domestic car choices or whether you shop at Walmart or Target… That’s your choice and your opinion. But it might not be the opinion of the next big Network Marketer out there looking to join a team.

My Mentor Michael Dlouhy, who has become a very good friend has taught me that in order to have more, we have to become more. We have to become the people that others want to do business with.

How can we do that if we criticize, belittle, judge and spew hatred all over the place? Even people who agree with your opinion, will think twice about joining you, because in the back of their minds they’ll be thinking, “wow, I better not do anything that they don’t like or I’m toast!”

And another thing to point out is if you’re just looking for people that think and behave the same way you do, how are you or them ever going to grow? How are you ever going to attract open-minded people into your organization? It will be just one big bitch session whenever you get together. Your business will never grow either.

Another thing that Michael has taught me is that don’t sponsor anyone into your business that you wouldn’t want to go on a 30 day cruise with. Good point. And some will argue that that is what they are doing by finding people to agree politically, or religiously, or whatever. But again I ask, are you building a business, or are you building a Church Group, or Political Party?

Something that I’ve also noticed about these people that I’m talking about is that they are the same people that are not very successful in building their business. It’s not growing fast enough, or their not at a level they think they should be.

I have to wonder is it really a mystery to them?

Michael Dlouhy developed a program called the 30 Day Mental Cleanse, and in this program we study the book Think and Grow Rich. Basically, the mastermind group is there to help us overcome the issues that hold us back in becoming better people. Part of the philosophy taught by Michael and the group is Love, Tolerance, Forgiveness and Acceptance of both ourselves and others.

I think that’s a very good place to start.

So I’m curious to hear your opinion on this topic (Generically of course). Leave a comment or send me an email with your thoughts.

Love to all, and may your successes come swiftly and more abundantly that you ever imagined!

Visalus Distributors – A Word of Caution!

Category : Company Review, Network Marketing, Policies and Procedures

Interesting news development today. Blyth, Inc., a publicly traded company has just completed the 3rd of 4 phases in the acquisition of Visalus.

Here’s the news article talking about the acquisition: PR Newswire.

So this brings up some interesting questions for the Distributors. And just to be clear, this is not an article to bash Visalus, it’s owners, nor Blyth, Inc. It’s just to point out some observations I’ve had and ask some questions that came to my mind.

As you know, with a publicly traded company, the shareholders call the shots. When times get lean (and they will for Visalus, no company is immune to that), who is going to get paid first? The Shareholders or the Distributors? You got it, the Shareholders. And where will that money come from? The checks of the Distributors!

One of the paragraphs from the article that I found very telling was this one:

All three company co-founders, Ryan Blair, Chief Executive Officer; Blake Mallen, Chief Marketing Officer; and Nick Sarnicola, top sales leader, have agreed to stay on with ViSalus in their current roles. The founders personally invested $14.6 million from the proceeds of the acquisition in restricted stock of parent company Blyth, Inc., making them the largest inside shareholders after the Goergen family.

Now that Ryan Blair, Blake Mallen and Nick Sarnicola are shareholders of Blyth, Inc. (and I might add, the 2nd largest shareholders), who do they answer to? Where do their best interests lie?

Don’t get me wrong here, in my opinion I think that Ryan, Blake and Nick are brilliant, upstanding guys, but I think the stakes have changed for Visalus. To me it appears that those three are not the final decision makers any longer and can no longer can put the distributors first in any financial decisions.

That brings me to another point that I’m concerned about. Visalus has had tremendous growth the last year. That growth is both a blessing and a potential caution for the distributors. What happens when Visalus becomes a household name? Will Visalus need the distributors any longer? It’s happened before… A company with a word-of-mouth distributor based business model gets big enough that they don’t need the distributors any longer and convert to a retail sales business model.

Now, I know you are probably saying that they wouldn’t do that or even that they can’t do that. Unfortunately, they can. You should take a look at the Policies and Procedures of Visalus, which is the binding agreement between the Distributors and the company. It’s all spelled out there in black and white what they can do.

If you’re a Distributor with Visalus and need help going through your policies, I can certainly help you with that. You should know what you’ve signed and how it binds you to the agreement.

Last but certainly not least, in the Policies and Procedures of Visalus, Distributors are forbid to be in any other Network Marketing company. Here’s the clause:

24. During the term of this agreement (and any renewals) I will not participate in any other network marketing companies. In addition, during the terms of the Agreement and for (1) one year thereafter, I will not solicit or recruit, ViSalus employees or Promoters, whether active or inactive, to participate in any network marketing program. I acknowledge that my violation of this provision will result in immediate termination of my Promotorship and payments of any kind.

What’s interesting about this in my mind, is that Blyth, Inc. with the acquisition of Visalus, now owns 2 Network Marketing companies. Visalus and PartyLite, a direct seller of candles, fragrance accessories and home ambiance products. So that sounds like what’s good for the Goose is not good for the Gander. It’s all about Integrity folks.

Again, please don’t get me wrong. I think Visalus is a great company and boy do they know how to market. I’m just concerned about some things I’m seeing. And just to be clear here, this article is just MY personal opinion and questions I would ask if I were in Visalus or considering joining them as a Distributor.

Something that my personal Mentor Michael Dlouhy has taught me is to learn HOW to think, not WHAT to think. He taught me to become a critical thinker. Personally, I wouldn’t want to build something for a few years only to see it taken out from under me. I’d hate to have to start all over. Something to think about.

With that said, I hope you have a blessed day and find success wherever you seek it!

Take care,

Relationship Building Skills – Attention to Detail

Category : Relationships

In Relationship Building – The Little Things Are Important

We are in a Relationship Building Business and some of the most important things are the little things.

We are, from the very start of any business relationship, basically interviewing for the position of business partner. We are being critiqued and evaluated at the start of that relationship. So we need to cross those “T”s and dot those “I”s.

People look for reasons not to like or trust what you have to say.

The important things to remember are the important things to get right.

Relationship Building Skills – Corresponding Tips

Here are some tips to keep in mind when corresponding with prospects:

  • When you are sending out an automated email and leaving it to the program to insert the names, make sure it works.

How many times have you gotten an email like this?

    Hello ‘insert name here’,

Does that make you feel warm and fuzzy about that person who sent that to you?

  • If you are manually writing an email, and want to add something you know about them personally, make sure the info is correct.

Don’t ask how their kids are if you’re not sure they even have any.

If you are not sure, it is better to omit the personal stuff than to get it wrong.

  • Use a spell-checker.

Even though a spell-checker won’t catch every error, it will catch the obvious ones.

I am not saying we need to be grammatical experts, and not make mistakes, we are human after all.

A good tip is to actually read what your write when your finished. You’d be surprised at how many people don’t.

  • Read what you write backwards.

A good friend once told me to read what I just wrote backwards. When you do it that way, you’re not caught up in the reading of sentences, but in the reading of each word. You’re more likely to catch misspelled words or words like “to” when you really mean “too” (this one is near the top of the list of mistakes people make, by the way).

Relationship Building Skills – A Person’s Name

In Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, one of his golden rules is;

Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.

Double and triple check that a person’s name is spelled right.

If their name is in an email you’re responding to, make sure you spell it right. There’s nothing worse then misspelling a name that you can reference right there!

And if you’re including something about a family member, make sure you have their name right also.

Don’t say “tell little Jimmy I said Happy Birthday”, when it is really little Jenny.

Relationship Building Skills – Be Professional In Everything You Do

These Relationship Building Skills apply not just for correspondence, but in everything you write. Blogs, Articles, Notes, Advertisements. Even your Facebook and Twitter Posts!

Be Professional. Check your grammar. Use slang words very sparingly if at all.

People really do want to follow you. But they also want to know that you pay attention to detail. If you don’t care enough to get the little things right, then you give the perception that you don’t really care at all.

Much Love,

Tianne Haines

The Money is in the List! – Wrong!

Category : List Building

I know you’ve been told this countless times… The money is in the list!

Is that really true? Or is your list nothing more than a bunch of names?

I’m going to venture out on a limb and tell you that the Money is NOT in the list….

The money is in the RELATIONSHIPS you build with the people on your list!

You see, I can show you how to build your list easily.

I can show you how to brand yourself so that people are attracted to you and WANT to be on you list.

BUT, if you don’t build relationships with the people on your list, you might as well be pulling names from the phone book…

It’s useless!!

Last Saturday, January 7th, my Good Friend and Personal Mentor Michael Dlouhy was interviewed on a Special Conference Call.

On this packed call Michael taught THE MOST IMPORTANT skill in building relationships with people!

If you don’t learn this SKILL, your Business is dead in the water, and your list is GARBAGE.

I don’t normally do this with the special calls we have, but this was such a good call I decided I’d share the recording with you so you can benefit from learning this skill just as I have.

It is Up to You by Jim Rohn

Category : Jim Rohn, Responsibility

Here’s one of my favorite messages from Jim Rohn:

One of the first things successful people realize is the old adage, “if it is to be, it is up to me.” That is, for you, the fact that your success and your course is up to you. This doesn’t mean that you do it all alone. It simply means that you take responsibility for your life and your career.

Too many people today look at opportunity and figure it is up to someone else to make sure they get it. They look at financial security and hope that the government will make sure they live safely in retirement or in case of disability. They wait and wait, figuring that it is up to someone else. And then the wait is over, and it is too late to do anything. Their life is over and they are filled with regret.

This isn’t true for you however. You know that you must take responsibility for your life. It is up to you.

The fact is that nobody else is going to do it for you “you must do it yourself”.

Now, some people may say, “Jim, that’s a lot of responsibility.” Friends, that is the best news you can ever hear. You get to choose your life. Hundreds of millions of people all around this world would give anything to live in the situation you do “just for the chance to have the opportunity to take control of their destiny. “It is up to you” is a great blessing!

Here’s why:

  1. You get to chart your own destiny. Maybe you want to start a small business and stay there. That’s great because you can choose that. Maybe you want to create a small chain of stores. Maybe you want to have a net worth of $100 million. That’s okay too. The idea is that you get to choose. You can do whatever you like. Different people have different dreams and they should live them accordingly.
  2. You can reap what you sow. Sleep in and go to work late and reap the return. Or get up early and outwork the others and earn a greater return. Place your capital at risk and earn a return “or place it at greater risk and perhaps reap a greater return. You decide what you will sow and thus what you will reap.
  3. No one else can stop you from getting your dream. Yes, there will always be things that come up and people who may not like what you are doing, but you can just move on and chart your own course. There is great freedom in that.
  4. You experience the joy of self-determination. There is no greater pride than knowing you set your mind on something and accomplished it. Those who live with a victim mentality never get to experience the joy of accomplishment because they are always waiting for someone else to come to the rescue. Those who take responsibility get to live the joy of seeing a job well done.

Let me ask you a question: Where will you be in 5 years? 10 years? Or 25 years? Do you know? DO you have an idea? Have you ever dreamed about it or set a goal for it? Are you willing to take responsibility and recognize that, “It is up to you?”

You will be wherever you decide to be in those timeframes. You decide. It is up to you.

And that is very exciting!

— Jim Rohn

What To Say To The Product-Driven Prospect

Category : Prospecting

I was talking to Michael Dlouhy the other day, and asked him how he handles people who only want to be in company with the greatest product since sliced bread.

Here’s his answer:

If you’ve been in network marketing very long, you’ve run into plenty of prospects who are totally focused on ONLY joining a company where they can sell a product they love.

I tell them, “Look. We have 30 products. You don’t have to use them all. You don’t even have to like them all. Matter of fact, we have a Woman’s Formula that helps balance out the hormones. Guess what? I don’t use the product. I don’t use that one. My wife does. She loves it. We’ve got hundreds of women who buy that product. They love it. I don’t have to use it.”

And That Makes Them Realize How Stupid It Is -

- that they have to love the product. Right there. And if it’s a woman – guess what?¬ Our company¬ has a Men’s Formula! It’s for the prostate.

And last time you checked, you didn’t have a prostate, because you’re a girl. But guess what? I’ve got a lot of guys that buy that product.

Another one I’ll talk about is our product that helps balance blood-sugar. I ask them, “Do you know anyone who has hypoglycemia, diabetes, low blood sugar, a sugar problem?”

“Yeah.”

“Great. Do you think that person would like to know about a product that’s all-natural, it’s been proven to help re-build the pancreas, and¬ will help them to use less insulin, and maybe even get them off of insulin?”

“Oh, yeah!”

You Don’t Have To Have Diabetes To Sell the Product, Do You?

Make it so ridiculous, they get it. I’m telling you, this is magic. People will come to you and they’re totally focused on finding a product that THEY love.

But that is NOT the way to build a long-term, successful, profitable business. When I hear that, I’ll tell them, “Well, then, go get diabetes. Go get diabetes, and this stuff will help you fix it. OK?

And of course, they laugh. It’s a ridiculous solution. But it makes them realize that the attitude that they MUST love the product is also ridiculous.

To get them into your company, tell them why YOU joined. Why did you join this company, this team, this sponsor.

I did a call the other day with a lady who is married to a heart surgeon. If I told you what they have to pay in insurance for him to stay in that business, it would blow your mind. Basically, he’s working for the insurance company.

So they need another income. They have to get something going. The first thing she said was, “Well, I’ll have to try the products first to see if I like them.”

And I went right into the Women’s Formula. I went right into diabetes. And I asked her,

“Do you have diabetes?”

She said, “No.”

I told her, “Well, you don’t have to go and get diabetes to sell a bunch of this product.”

And she got it. She joined on the spot. She figured she’d just try the product but instead, she got the idea. Now she’s in the business.

Do I ask people to join? Do I push them? Do I twist their arm? Do I say, “Get in now and you’ll be rich by Tuesday?”

No. I present the case for my company & our team. The prospect makes their own decision. Mostly, they ASK if they can join. It comes from THEM. How could anything be more powerful?

Sometimes you just have to make them beg.

Don’t Take Advantage of Others!

Category : Health and Happiness, Integrity, Mastermind

Meditation for today, November 6th, 2011

Did you cheat the other fellow or yourself? Think carefully before you answer

When you are dishonest in your dealings with others or when you take advantage of them, you cheat yourself more than you cheat them. They may regret their dealings with you for a time, but they will eventually get over it and move on to other things. You, on the other hand, must live with your behavior for the rest of your life. In your heart, you will know the truth about what kind of person you are.
Everyone is occasionally tempted to take advantage of others. If they are dumb enough to get themselves into the situation, the thinking goes, they deserve what they get. In reality, however, when you are fair and honest with a person of whom you could have taken advantage, you become a better person.

Don’t Judge Others Before Judging Yourself!

Category : Health and Happiness, Mastermind

Meditation for today, November 5th, 2011

How can you judge others accurately if you have not learned to judge yourself accurately?

The ability to evaluate yourself and your performance objectively is critical to your relationships with others and will have an enormous impact upon the level of success you achieve during your lifetime. Unless you can honestly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, how can you ever expect to improve your performance? You must determine where you are before you can develop a plan to get you where you would like to be.
If you were an independent, dispassionate observer, what advice would you give to yourself to improve your skills, your work habits, your interaction with others, and your contribution to the organization? Honesty about yourself is the first step toward self-improvement.
